Social Workers and Human Resource Managers in High Demand as Weak Economy Hits Home for Many

MCLEAN, Va., June 11 /PRNewswire/ — It’s a sign of difficult times for many. Social workers and counselors are now among some of the nation’s most in-demand professionals, according to new findings in the Jobfox Top 25 Most Wanted U.S. Job Candidates: June 2008 rankings, released today.
(Logo: )
Social workers and counselors ranked as the seventh most wanted professionals, according to the June report from Jobfox (), a free online service that uses precision matching to help qualified candidates link up with compatible job opportunities. The Counseling/Social Work profession cracked the Top 25 for the first time since Jobfox began tracking job trends in March 2008.
“For about a year now, there’s been a steady increase in the demand for social workers and counselors,” said Debbie Sikes, the clinical director for the National Counseling Group Inc., a private group of therapists and counselors providing community-based and outpatient services to individuals and families throughout Virginia. Her organization uses Jobfox services to help find qualified mental health professionals.
“With increases in gas and food prices, we are seeing more stress and more demand for outreach services — especially among low-income families,” Sikes said. “Money and job pressures are often the triggers to higher levels of anxiety and emotional problems.”
The June report is available at:
Demand for Human Resource Executives also on the Rise
The Jobfox rankings also indicate increased hiring activity for human resource executives — perhaps more signs of what’s well, what’s not so well and what remains a challenge for U.S. businesses in the current economic climate.
Human resource executives are now the 25th most wanted, according to the Jobfox rankings report for June. Recruiting/Staffing professionals also ranked 24th — the second-consecutive month that recruiters have held this position.
“There are still many bright spots, even in the face of an uncertain economy,” said Rob McGovern, CEO of Jobfox (). “Most companies continue to place a premium on the recruitment and retention of qualified professionals. There will be layoffs, but most companies are depending on human resource managers to keep talent losses to a minimum. And many companies continue to aggressively seek new sources of talent from their recruiters.”
Many professions remain in high demand, according to the Jobfox Top 25 Most Wanted U.S. Job Candidates: June 2008 rankings. The most wanted professions include Software Design/Development, Sales Representative/Business Development, Accounting/Finance Executive, Accounting and Nursing.
Rounding out the Top 10 are Networking/System Administration, Counseling/Social Work, Business Analysis — Research, Business Analysis — Software Implementation and Mechanical Engineering.
Mental health care organizations throughout the nation say they are not surprised by the appearance of social workers and counselors in the Top 10.
“We’re certainly seeing more demand for mental health services,” said Richard Jennings, the director of Human Resources for Momentum for Mental Health, Santa Clara County’s largest private, nonprofit agency providing mental health services to adults and transition-aged youths. “The indigent and disadvantaged, especially, are having a tough time holding jobs and coping with rising costs for essentials such as food and shelter.”
“Social workers and their services are needed now more than ever,” added Deborah Brackens, director of case management at Inova Alexandria Hospital in Virginia. “The acuity of patients, coupled with the demands of society, contribute to a very compressed time frame to assess and meet patients’ needs. Medical social workers have the skills and capabilities to alleviate the stress that patients and their families often experience.”
About the rankings
The Jobfox Top 25 Most Wanted U.S. Job Candidates: June 2008 rankings were derived from a stratified random sample of more than 4,000 U.S. job openings from the Jobfox database during a 120-day period ending March 24, 2008. In total, Jobfox identified more than 150 distinct professions for which employers were seeking candidates during the period. Also captured in the rankings are the professions most desired by candidates, based on a stratified random sample of more than 100,000 Jobfox candidate profiles.

Healthcare Tech and the World: A New Perspective on Innovation in Healthcare

PLANO, Texas, June 10 /PRNewswire/ — Edition 19
Host: Dr. Kevin Fickenscher - Perot Systems’ Executive Vice President,
International Healthcare
Guest: Dr. Jack Lord, Senior Vice President and Chief Innovation Officer,
Humana

Perot Systems continues its series of podcasts with a forward-looking discussion about the increasing role Information Technology will play in the transformation of healthcare. In this episode, Dr. Kevin Fickenscher discusses with Dr. Jack Lord the innovations taking place across the healthcare industry, as well as what the future holds for healthcare providers.
The following quotes from Dr. Lord are highlights of the podcast:
Regarding the purpose of Humana’s, ‘Innovation Center’: ” … We decided very clearly to break out of what was a traditional casting of the HMO and move both the clinical and product activities into a spot that would be forward looking … every year has been a little bit different, we’ve added new features, we’ve grown because of talent and I think by virtue of having an innovation center, it’s really created an opportunity for us to bring talent in from all over the world.”
Regarding enhancing the quality of healthcare for individuals: ” … health is something that is co-created … by the person … and with the healthcare system. So that … says that the expert around health becomes (the patient) as opposed to the doctor or with the legacy expert system. I think a second piece is moving out of a world that we refer to as the world of sickness and death to a world of life and happiness. The traditional healthcare delivery system has constantly focused on things that fall into the repair shop type of mode and it’s taken us down a path of insatiable economic utilization of services.”
Regarding the state of innovation in the healthcare industry: ” … I think innovation is almost bimodal in healthcare. It’s fabulous in the area of discovery of new molecules and devices and new medical techniques and it’s abysmal in terms of rethinking the actual delivery of services.”
Regarding healthcare policies at the state and federal level: “There seems to be consensus on both sides of the aisle that creating a connected IT architecture is something that people agree upon. I think it becomes really important to understand that you need to look at population health in a way where each person’s health becomes sort of a tile that fits into a mosaic that allows you to understand what’s going on with that person’s life, that person’s family, their connectivity.”
Information about Jack Lord, MD: Dr. Lord joined Humana in 2000 to help develop the company’s consumer-centric business strategy. In his role as Chief Innovation Officer, he is responsible for designing innovative health plan products and leading processes that enable people to navigate the healthcare system and support their health needs. A board-certified forensic pathologist, Dr. Lord began his medical career in the U.S. Navy, where he spent 11 years on active duty, most recently as director of the Naval Medical Command’s Quality Assurance Division in the Office of the Surgeon General.
Information about Kevin Fickenscher, MD: Dr. Fickenscher is a recognized senior physician executive and healthcare thought leader. He has extensive experience in healthcare management, and holds an international reputation as a dynamic, visionary, and strategic leader in the healthcare industry. NBA All-Star Alonzo Mourning to Host Educational Youth Basketball Clinic in Harlem

NEW YORK, June 10 /PRNewswire/ — Alonzo Mourning, center for the Miami HEAT, will host an educational basketball clinic for local youth in Harlem today. During the clinic, Mourning, who was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease (CKD) in 2000, will share his personal story to raise awareness of CKD and two common risk factors, diabetes and high blood pressure, as well as highlight the importance of preventing these diseases.
Approximately 20 million Americans suffer from CKD — including an estimated 650,000 New York City residents — and another estimated 20 million are at risk. The basketball clinic, hosted by Shape Up New York and sponsored by the American Association of Kidney Patients (AAKP) and Ortho Biotech Products, L.P., aims to increase awareness about these health problems and encourage individuals who may be at risk to speak with their doctors.
The clinic will take place at the Jackie Robinson Recreation Center, located at 85 Bradhurst Avenue & 146th Street in East Harlem, at 6 p.m. EDT.
Nearly 20 percent of the adult population in East Harlem and the South Bronx has diabetes, a risk factor for CKD, according to a report by the City University of New York and the Public health Association of New York City. The report also noted that African Americans with diabetes are more than twice as likely to develop CKD than individuals of other ethnic backgrounds with the disease. In addition, African Americans have a higher incidence of high blood pressure compared to other ethnic groups, which, if left untreated, can also cause CKD.
“Chronic kidney disease can occur at any age, and I want to encourage those who may be at risk to get tested and treated,” said Mourning. “It is important for people to understand the risk factors for the disease and to talk to their doctors. Had I been aware of the disease, I might have been diagnosed earlier and prevented my condition from worsening.”
The most common risk factors of CKD are diabetes, high blood pressure and a family history of kidney disease. In New York City, approximately 800,000 adults have diabetes, while an estimated 2 million adults have high blood pressure.
“The American Diabetes Association, the American Association of Kidney Patients and the National Kidney Foundation all emphasize the importance of screening for CKD in patients with diabetes or high blood pressure,” said Simon Prince, MD, FACP, FASN, and a nephrologist in the New York City area. “We encourage children and their parents to attend the clinic together, listen to Alonzo’s story and learn more about CKD and its risk factors. Early recognition and intervention are crucial to improving health outcomes.”
Mourning was diagnosed with kidney disease in 2000, and had a kidney transplant in 2003. Since then, he has made a triumphant return to the NBA, and has dedicated much of his life to helping others with kidney disease. In addition to Mourning, AAKP President, Roberta Wager, RN, MSN, will be available to discuss some of the resources available to patients who have CKD.
About Chronic Kidney Disease
Chronic kidney disease is a progressive condition in which the kidneys are unable to function effectively. Many people, including Mourning before his diagnosis, do not realize that they have CKD, or are at risk for developing it, until they have reached the advanced stages of the condition. The incidence of CKD appears to be correlated to diabetes and high blood pressure. Diabetes is the leading cause of CKD in the U.S.
