Duke University Health System to Implement Clinically Optimized, Advanced Authentication Solution From Sentillion

ANDOVER, Mass., June 9 /PRNewswire/ — Duke University health System is deploying a new advanced authentication capability from Sentillion, called Sentillion Tap & Go(TM), to streamline information systems access for its 14,000 clinical users while maintaining strong data and application security. Duke will deploy Sentillion Tap & Go on over 3,100 shared workstations.
Duke, one of the elite medical centers in the United States, according to U.S. News & World Report, is already live on Vergence, Sentillion’s clinical workstation solution which includes Single Sign-On (SSO) and context management. Now with the implementation of Tap & Go physicians and other caregivers will be able to roam throughout a defined work area and sign on to different workstations simply by tapping their standard-issue passive proximity identification badge against a workstation reader. The system will dramatically speed and simplify clinicians’ access to vital patient records and software applications that have become essential to their professional effectiveness.
“It is rare in enterprise IT today to be able to plug and play two disparate pieces of technology,” observed Karen Rourk, Director of Ambulatory EMR and Desktop Development at Duke University health System. “Sentillion Tap & Go makes our identity and access management fully complementary to our physical security system. When we implemented Vergence we experienced a dramatic savings in the amount of time it took caregivers to sign in and access their applications and now with Sentillion Tap & Go we can further reduce the time it takes to authenticate by as much as 50% — something we know our caregivers will appreciate.”
Sentillion Tap & Go is a patent-pending, advanced authentication capability that leverages standard passive proximity cards to deliver the simplest sign-on process in the healthcare industry today. Sentillion Tap & Go is easy to adopt because it leverages the same badge that organizations use for physical access. Caregivers can now use one badge for entry into the parking lot, building access, as well as single sign-on to their workstation.
With Sentillion Tap & Go, users perform a two-part authentication at the beginning of their shift by tapping their passive proximity card against a card reader and entering their password or providing other verifiable authentication such as a fingerprint biometric. Once this two-part authentication is completed, Sentillion’s technology initiates an authentication grace period. During the grace period, the user can access any other shared workstation in a defined area, such as the emergency department, simply by tapping their badge against a reader. Users only need to perform the two-part authentication when their grace period expires or when they move to an area of the hospital with a different Sentillion Tap & Go policy.
Sentillion’s identity and access management solutions are the most widely deployed in healthcare and are used daily by more than 350,000 caregivers in 560 hospitals across North America and the United Kingdom, including Eisenhower Medical Center, Great Ormond Street Hospital, Sisters of Mercy health System, Sharp HealthCare and Texas Children’s Hospital. Sentillion is responsible for the largest SSO deployment in healthcare, which presently provides access to 182 clinical applications for 42,000 users across 34 hospitals and continues to expand in all three areas.

Time to Talk About CAM: Health Care Providers and Patients Need To Ask and Tell

BETHESDA, Md., June 9 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), part of the National Institutes of health (NIH), has launched Time to Talk, an educational campaign to encourage patients — particularly those age 50 or older — and their health care providers to openly discuss the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). CAM is a group of diverse medical and health care systems, practices, and products that are not presently considered to be part of conventional medicine, such as herbal supplements, meditation, naturopathy, and acupuncture.
According to a national consumer survey conducted by NCCAM and AARP, almost two-thirds of people age 50 or older are using some form of CAM, yet less than one-third of these CAM users talk about it with their providers. The NCCAM/AARP survey revealed some reasons why this doctor-patient dialogue about CAM does not occur. The most common reasons survey respondents cited were
— That the physician never asked
— They did not know they should discuss CAM
— There was not enough time during the office visit.

More than one-half of respondents who had talked about CAM with their physician said they (not their physician) initiated the CAM discussion. The telephone survey was administered to a nationally representative group of 1,559 people age 50 or older.
“In an era of genomics and personalized medicine, we need to remember that a key ingredient to good health care is the dialogue you, as a patient, have with your providers,” said Elias A. Zerhouni, M.D., NIH Director. “And talking about what CAM therapies you use is an important part of that discussion. This is important for people of all ages.”
The Time to Talk campaign is aimed at addressing the need for this dialogue to help ensure safe, coordinated care among all conventional and CAM therapies. Talking not only allows integrated care, it also minimizes risks of interactions with a patient’s conventional treatments. When patients tell their providers about their CAM use, they can more effectively manage their health. When providers ask their patients about CAM use, they can ensure that they are fully informed and can help patients make wise health care decisions.
“As frequent users of CAM, people 50 and older need to understand the importance of discussing CAM use with their providers to ensure coordinated, safe care. Simply put, it’s time to talk,” said Josephine P. Briggs, M.D., NCCAM Director. “Giving your health care providers a full picture of what you do to manage your health helps you stay in control.”
NCCAM’s Time to Talk campaign encourages patients to tell their providers about CAM use and providers to ask about it by offering tools and resources — such as wallet cards, posters, and tip sheets — all of which are available for free on the NCCAM Web site (nccam.nih.gov) or can be ordered from NCCAM’s information Clearinghouse (1-888-644-6226). NCCAM is reaching out to professional associations and consumer organizations to help educate their members about the importance of this dialogue and the availability of NCCAM’s campaign materials. As the Federal government’s lead agency for scientific research on CAM, NCCAM is committed to educating both consumers and health care providers about the importance of discussing CAM and providing evidence- based information to help with health care decision making.
Patient Tips for Discussing CAM with Providers
— When completing patient history forms, be sure to include all therapies
and treatments you use. Make a list in advance.
— Tell your health care providers about all therapies or treatments -
including over-the-counter and prescription medicines, as well as
herbal and dietary supplements.
— Take control. Don’t wait for your providers to ask about your CAM use.
— If you are considering a new CAM therapy, ask your health care
providers about its safety, effectiveness, and possible interactions
with medicines (both prescription and over-the-counter).

Provider Tips for Discussing CAM with Patients
— Include a question about CAM use on medical history forms.
— Ask your patients to bring a list of all therapies they use, including
prescription, over-the-counter, herbal therapies, and other CAM
practices.
— Have your medical staff initiate the conversation.

US FDA Admits Risks of Mercury Dental Fillings, Settles Lawsuit

WASHINGTON, June 5 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — “After 32 years of delay, the Food and Drug Administration has finally agreed to comply with the law and set a date to classify mercury amalgam as a substance that poses a health risk to pregnant women and unborn babies, and children. This about-face resulted from settling, earlier this week, our lawsuit, Moms Against Mercury et al. v. Von Eschenbach, Commissioner, et al. The FDA must now finish classification within one year of the close of the public comment period on its amalgam policy, that is, by July 28, 2009. The FDA also agreed to and, with uncharacteristic speed, has already changed its website on mercury amalgam — dramatically.
Gone are all of FDA’s claims that no science exists that amalgam is unsafe, or that other countries have acted for environmental reasons only, or that the 2006 FDA advisory panel affirmed amalgam’s safety, all of which are untrue. Instead, the FDA has moved to a more neutral course, while still recognizing the serious health risks posed by amalgam in particular for children and unborn children, for pregnant women, and for those with mercury immuno-sensitivity.
The Updated June 3, 2008 FDA website (see: ) now states, for example:
“Dental amalgams contain mercury, which may have neurotoxic effects on the nervous systems of developing children and fetus.”
“Pregnant women and persons who may have a health condition that makes them more sensitive to mercury exposure, including individuals with existing high levels of mercury bioburden, should not avoid seeking dental care, but should discuss options with their health practitioner.”
In September 2006, an advisory panel to the FDA reviewed FDA’s research and heard presentations from the public about the benefits and risks of mercury and amalgam. The joint committee concluded with personal recommendations by the members. These include that FDA should:
Consider informed consent for patients receiving amalgam
Consider labeling changes restricting its use in pregnant woman and children
Consider the relevancy of the “precautionary principle”
You can read the summary of the FDA advisory panel meeting at:
The FDA website now also states that “Some other countries follow a ‘precautionary principle’ and avoid the use of dental amalgam in pregnant women. The FDA provides links to advice about dental amalgams from regulatory agencies in other countries:
Canada:
France:
Sweden: “
The plaintiffs included a team of four nonprofit groups, two public officials, three dental professionals, and two consumer victims: Moms Against Mercury (Amy Carson and Angela Medlin), Connecticut Coalition for Environmental Justice (Dr. Mark Mitchell), Oregonians for Life (Mary Starrett), mercury expert Michael Bender (as a of the Vermont Advisory Committee on Mercury Pollution), Arizona Senator Karen Johnson, Dr. Andy Landerman, Dr. Corrie Crowe, dental assistant Karen Palmer, consumer advocates Linda Brocato and Anita Vazquez Tibau, and Consumers for Dental Choice.

WALNUT CREEK, Calif., June 5 /PRNewswire/ — DayOne will open its newest center in Walnut Creek this Saturday in the midst of stagnating retail forecasts and the lowest consumer confidence in 16 years. In addition to providing high quality products for new families, DayOne offers health and fitness programs for moms and babies, educational programs for new families, and access to health care professionals to meet the needs of expectant and new mothers.

Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network Boosts Network Health With ForeScout CounterACT

CUPERTINO, Calif., June 4 /PRNewswire/ — ForeScout Technologies, a market leader in clientless network access control (NAC) and policy management solutions for large enterprises, today announced that Lehigh Valley Hospital and health Network (LVHHN), a premier academic community hospital and health services provider in Allentown and Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, has deployed the CounterACT(TM) family of appliances to mediate access to its health services network.
According to Brian Martin, Information Security Manager for LVHHN, “Our network users — including doctors, nurses, specialists, and visiting guests — were bringing their own, sometimes infected computers into work. Some of these computers weren’t compliant with our security policies and needed OS updates, security patches or anti-virus software installed. Others were hospital property that had been used off-site, picked up malware, and began setting off alarms when they reconnected to the Lehigh network. We wanted a way to control these conditions and let users self-correct the problems.”
Martin and his colleagues began looking for a network access solution that would also detect and respond to malicious behavior that a simple intrusion detection solution would not pick up. After evaluating solutions from various NAC and infrastructure providers, the organization chose ForeScout’s CounterACT.
“I was bowled over by the detection capabilities of CounterACT,” said Martin. “That you get a two-in-one intrusion prevention and NAC solution in CounterACT just makes it that much better. Plus, you hear about NAC being tricky and difficult to deploy: that hasn’t been the case for us. The deployment was one of our smoothest. It took under a week and is now protecting over 20,000 endpoints.”
Today’s health enterprises — like Lehigh Valley — face a steady influx of vulnerabilities introduced by guests and employees who are able to bypass physical security and gain network connection inside the perimeter defenses. CounterACT addresses this problem by enforcing network security policies across all managed and unmanaged network devices, including desktops and laptops as well as non-OS devices such as VoIP phones, handhelds and network printers, without the need for a software agent of any kind.
“The Lehigh Valley health deployment demonstrates, once again, that CounterACT over-delivers on its promise to ease deployment and deliver best-in-class network access control with built-in intrusion prevention,” said Ray Wizbowski, vice president, ForeScout. “At ForeScout, we continue to exceed our customers’ requirements, helping them buy into a NAC platform and strategy that fits their security requirements today, while giving them a cost-effective policy compliance platform they can rely on in the future.”
CounterACT combines clientless network access control (NAC) and signatureless intrusion prevention to ensure all connected and connecting devices are in compliance with network security policies and are free of self-propagating threats. CounterACT seamlessly integrates into any network environment without requiring costly upgrades or infrastructure changes, and enables enterprises to tailor enforcement actions to match the level of policy violations, ensuring user disruption only occurs when it is warranted or required by the IT staff.
About ForeScout Technologies, Inc.
ForeScout specializes in network policy management for enterprises looking to secure their networks without needlessly punishing end users. The company’s network appliances are in service in over 450 enterprises in 37 countries, with customers from Banking, Education, Energy, Financial Services, Healthcare, Manufacturing, Technology and Transportation. Its flagship product, CounterACT(TM) is the world’s most deployed NAC solution: it is fast and easy for administrators to deploy, manage and maintain and offers users zero-disruption. Headquartered in Cupertino, California, ForeScout has an R&D center in Tel Aviv, Israel and offers a global sales and support network. For more about ForeScout and CounterACT, visit .

New Vitamin Company Caters to Occupational Health Concerns

CHANDLER, Ariz., June 3 /PRNewswire/ — When Brett Waslefsky’s wife said her job was making her sick, she meant it literally. As a school teacher, the stresses of the job, as well as a germ-filled environment, were making it difficult for her to stay healthy. With this casual conversation, a new kind of vitamin was born.
In 2007, Waslefsky founded Employee Vita, a web-based vitamin company that offers occupation specific nutritional supplements, the first of its kind.
“After talking to my wife, I realized that no supplement focused specifically on occupations. Most people spend at least a third of their lives at work. Depending on the job’s demands, their health can certainly suffer. Occupation specific vitamins can address these job-related health challenges,” Waslefsky said.
To formulate his product, Waslefsky first conducted personal interviews and surveys of teachers, truckers, nurses, and firefighters to determine their most commonly occurring health issues. Then he consulted a nutrition expert to identify the vitamins and minerals needed to address these concerns.
The result was a list of “proprietary blends” to describe a combination of nutrients that address the specific health needs of each occupation. Each occupation specific supplement contains several health targeted blends in addition to at least 100 percent of the recommended daily allowance of vitamins and minerals and increased B-vitamins.
“Before Employee Vita, people had to buy multiple bottles and take tons of pills to get what they needed. That’s confusing, expensive, and downright inconvenient. My occupation specific vitamins allow people to get exactly what they need in one supplement. It’s cheaper, easier, and better addresses their unique needs. It takes the guesswork out of staying healthy,” Waslefsky said.
By partnering with a Chandler, Arizona-based vitamin manufacturer, Waslefsky was able to assemble a team of experts to ensure his supplements were effective and safe.
“Employee Vita’s production adheres to the current Good Manufacturing Practices of the National Safety Foundation. These regulations are stringent and ensure identity, purity, strength, and composition of the product,” he said.
Currently, Employee Vita produces Teacher Vita and Trucker Vita, supplements for people in these two challenging career fields. Nurse Vita will be available in June 2008. Firefighter Vita is in the production phase. Waslefsky is presently researching formulas for sales professionals and police officers.

Isabella’s Healthy Bakery Unveils Activate - A New Probiotic Muffin Fortified with GanedenBC30 Probiotic

NEW ORLEANS, June 3 /PRNewswire/ — Isabella’s health Bakery launched Activate raisin bran probiotic fortified muffins at this year’s International Dairy/Deli/Bakery Association (IDDBA) show in New Orleans. The new Activate muffins are being positioned to support digestive health and are fortified with the high-survivability probiotic, GanedenBC30 (Bacillus coagulans GBI-30, 6086).
(Logo: )
Isabella’s Healthy Bakery president, Monica Curtis, describes the addition of GanedenBC30 as a perfect match. “For so many years, we’ve been focusing on taking things out of our muffins. Now the opposite is true. We’ve started to enhance them with nutrients to offer consumers the best of both worlds — a muffin that not only tastes good, but is also good for you. Creating a muffin that helps support digestive health was the next logical step.” While the addition of the probiotic, GanedenBC30 delivers essential healthy bacteria to the digestive tract, the raisins and bran serve as a great source of fiber.
The new muffins are powered by GanedenBC30, a patented, self-affirmed GRAS probiotic produced by consumer healthcare company, Ganeden Biotech. The company has dubbed GanedenBC30 as “The Probiotic That Can Take It” and claims it can survive harsh manufacturing processes and deliver ten times the live cells as yogurt.
“When I first presented the idea of adding a probiotic to our muffins, our R&D team looked at me like I was crazy,” explains Curtis. “But after we were introduced to GanedenBC30 and saw first hand how it survives the intense heat of our baking ovens, we were all sold.”
Ganeden’s Co-Founder and Chief Scientist, Sean Farmer explains, “GanedenBC30 stands apart from other traditional probiotics. It’s a spore-forming probiotic bacterium, meaning that inside the bacterial cell is a hardened structure, or spore, which is analogous to a seed. This spore protects the cell’s genetic material from the heat and pressure of manufacturing processes, challenges of shelf life as well as the acid and bile it is exposed to during digestive transit. The viable spore is then able to germinate and produce new vegetative cells once it is safely inside the small intestine. Other ‘traditional’ probiotic organisms are not able to form these protective spores, making them vulnerable to heat, pressure, shelf life variables and the acid and bile challenges of the digestive system. This unique make-up is why we initially chose a strain of Bacillus coagulans over other conventional probiotic strains.”
The new Activate raisin bran probiotic fortified muffins are available for grocery store distribution for retail sale in 4-pack clamshells under the Isabella’s Healthy Bakery brand. Future plans are in place to include GanedenBC30 in other Isabella’s products including breakfast bars and cakes.
About Isabella’s Healthy Bakery
Isabella’s Healthy Bakery, a division of Main Street Gourmet, is a supplier of healthy baked goods including muffins, cookies & cakes. They specialize in sugar free, fat free, no sugar added and whole grain categories. The new Activate probiotic fortified muffin introduces their new line of functional foods including Optimize, a Mountainberry Acai pomegranate flavored anti-oxidant enriched muffin, and Revitalize, a peanut butter chocolate flavored energy boosting muffin.
About Ganeden Biotech
Founded in 1996, Ganeden Biotech is a consumer healthcare company that features a popular line of over-the-counter digestive and immune fitness products under the Sustenex and Digestive Advantage brands, including its extremely popular products for the management of Irritable Bowel Syndrome, lactose intolerance, occasional constipation and intestinal gas. One A Day(R) and Major League Baseball Raise Over $106,000 to Strike Out Prostate Cancer

MORRISTOWN, N.J., June 2 /PRNewswire/ — Watching your favorite player strike out isn’t usually cause for celebration, but for One A Day(R) multivitamins and Major League Baseball (MLB) strikeouts are leading to big wins. The makers of One A Day and MLB announced today the latest results of the “One A Day Men’s Presents the MLB Strike Out Prostate Cancer Challenge.” Created earlier this year as part of an exclusive partnership between MLB and One A Day, the program has raised $106,120 to date for the Prostate Cancer Foundation.
As part of the program, One A Day and MLB will donate $10 for every strikeout throughout the 2008 Major League Baseball season to the Prostate Cancer Foundation, the world’s largest philanthropic source of support for prostate cancer research. An additional $1 million will be donated if any one pitcher achieves 21 strikeouts in a nine-inning game to set a new MLB record. The goals of the program are to raise funds to support research to find a cure for prostate cancer and to raise awareness about the importance of maintaining prostate health through proper nutrition and early detection of problems.
“We are thrilled that One A Day and Major League Baseball have come together to raise awareness and funds to help find better treatments and a cure for prostate cancer,” said Dave Perron, Vice President, Baseball and Sports Enterprises for the Prostate Cancer Foundation. “With these two strong organizations in the fight, we know we’ll be able to do even more to find a cure for this deadly disease.”
Prostate cancer is a disease one in every six men will be diagnosed with during his lifetime. For Chicago White Sox designated hitter and program spokesperson Jim Thome, the disease hits very close to home.
“Prostate cancer affects far too many men each year including members of my own family,” said Thome. “So, getting involved in this program with One A Day was a no brainer. I want to do all I can to spread the word about the things men can do to help maintain their prostate health.”
One A Day has complete multivitamins specially formulated for men to support prostate health. Both One A Day Men’s health and One A Day Men’s 50 Advantage have selenium to help support prostate health.
“We created this program with MLB with high expectations based on our shared commitment to Americans’ health and well-being,” said Jay Kolpon, Vice President, Marketing, Bayer HealthCare. “With $106,120 raised so far, the ‘One A Day Men’s Presents the MLB Prostate Cancer Challenge’ is set to make important strides in the fight against prostate cancer.”
Each month of the season, an update on the number of strikeouts and contribution to date is announced through a national television and print campaign. The program will culminate during the postseason with a televised on-field ceremony announcing the strikeout and contribution totals for the season.
