WALTHAM, Mass., July 28 /PRNewswire/ — Colubris Networks, Inc., the leading global provider of intelligent wireless LANs for enterprises and service providers, today announced that Ramsay health Care, a global hospital group operating more than 100 hospitals and day surgery facilities across Australia, the United Kingdom and Indonesia, has begun a phased deployment of Colubris WLAN equipment to enable wireless computing for health care practitioners and surgeons at the company’s facilities. inTechnology Distribution is Colubris’ Australian distribution partner for the project.
Ramsay health Care is well respected in the health care industry for operating quality private hospitals and for its excellent record in hospital management and patient care. The group’s facilities cater to a broad range of health care needs from outpatient procedures to highly complex surgery, as well as psychiatric care and rehabilitation. With more than 8,000 beds, Ramsay health Care employs almost 25,000 staff locally and operates across three countries. Using Colubris’ WLAN wireless equipment, Ramsay health Care is making new and existing hospital applications accessible to care givers from several areas within their facilities. The ability for surgeons and specialists to access information both pre and post procedure and while in the operating theatre, significantly increases practitioner efficiency while also improving patient care and safety.
Further, having experienced the convenience and versatility of the Colubris Wireless Mobility solution, Ramsay health Care is now exploring its ability to leverage this wireless infrastructure to achieve the substantial benefits that can be gained using wireless voice and messaging, staff roaming applications, real time location tracking of equipment and patient internet access among other applications.
“Wireless deployments in health care settings need to be high performing, reliable and secure, and we’ve experienced all of that and more with Colubris’ WLAN equipment,” said Mick Campbell, CIO, Ramsay health Care. “We’ve heard only positive comments about the new wireless network. Our health care applications, running over a Colubris network, will give our practitioners confidence that they can access the information they need to provide the best possible care to their patients.”
In addition to allowing access to information wirelessly, Ramsay health Care has introduced innovative new applications intended to improve patient care and safety. One example is the “traybax” program designed to track sterilized surgical equipment before, during and after surgical procedures employing a system utilizing bar codes and wireless scanners. Each tray is scanned prior to the scheduled procedure and ensures that the right tray is selected and the inventory tracking capability allows the surgical team to precisely account for all equipment post procedure.
inTechnology and Ramsay health Care have deployed Colubris WLANs in 12 different locations to date, including 11 hospitals and the company’s IT laboratory. In total, more than 90 Multi-Service Access Points (MAP-330s) have been deployed across these sites, and each site utilizes a single Multi-Service Controller. Additional rollouts of the Colubris solution at other facilities in the Ramsay health Care network are scheduled based on established need and budget considerations. Ramsay health Care decided to deploy Colubris because of its distributed architecture, which eliminates the bottlenecks and performance problems that can occur with centralized solutions. Other advantages were Colubris’ strong security, industry-leading QoS and an upgrade path that maximizes past technology investments while allowing for future growth and expansion.
“The Ramsay health Care WLAN project is a great example of how wirelessly enabling applications spurs innovation which in turn improves efficiency and patient care,” explained Tom Racca, vice president of marketing at Colubris. “Hospitals are served by highly mobile workforces. This complex environment makes it challenging to provide instant access to the information required to provide top-notch patient care. As such, more and more hospitals are turning to wireless solutions to meet their unique requirements and organizations such as Ramsay health Care are demonstrating how Colubris wireless solutions, which enable true mobility, are meeting their needs.”

NI LabVIEW Monitors Structural Health of Summer Olympic Venues in Beijing

AUSTIN, Texas, July 23 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — National Instruments today announced the China Earthquake Administration (CEA), the leading governmental body managing the country’s earthquake preparedness and disaster mitigation, selected a structural health monitoring (SHM) solution developed by National Instruments Alliance Partner CGM Engineering, Inc., based on the NI LabVIEW graphical system design platform and NI CompactRIO programmable automation controllers. The systems are designed to aid engineers in conducting structural health research on seven recently constructed megastructures in China including both of the main venues for the 2008 Summer Olympics — the Beijing National Stadium and the National Aquatics Center.
(Logo: )
“The main objective of this civil engineering project is to develop a state-of-the-art solution to monitor structural health characteristics including stability, reliability and livability in real time by using contemporary computing, sensor and communication technology,” said Chris McDonald, vice president of CGM Engineering. “Our systems are designed to capture the vibrational signatures of structures and detect any sudden shifts of structural characteristics to improve structures and help reduce the loss of life and property when catastrophic events such as earthquakes, hurricanes or fires occur.”
The nine 64-channel and two 36-channel SHM systems each contain multiple CompactRIO controllers that directly connect to accelerometers for vibration measurements and an external GPS receiver for inter-chassis synchronization. Within each chassis, the LabVIEW FPGA Module is used to synchronize each measurement channel to within /- 10 microseconds of the GPS-disciplined clock. The LabVIEW Real-Time Module also is used to program user-configurable filtering to prevent unwanted noise from interfering with the low-frequency measurements being acquired. Each system is encapsulated in a rugged NEMA enclosure, which permits the unit to operate in high humidity and temperatures ranging from -40 C to 70 C.
The SHM system performs continuous, real-time monitoring at each location, and engineers can remotely access the locally stored data from anywhere in the world via secure Internet connections. Additionally, engineers can configure the systems using either a single or multivariate architecture to send e-mail notifications when events occur.
The CEA selected this system based on NI technology over other solutions because it offers continuous, real-time monitoring, time-based GPS synchronization and the highest channel count for the lowest cost. The technology also provides a simple, out-of-the-box setup and a variety of I/O options that can be quickly and easily reconfigured to meet changing system requirements.
In addition to the Olympic venues, the SHM systems are deployed in the 104-story World Trade Center in Shanghai, 66-story Park Hyatt Hotel complex in Beijing, 240 m concrete arch dam in Ertan, 8266 m cable-stayed bridge in Shan-Tou and base-isolated CEA data center in Beijing. Ultimately, the data collected from this research will be used to improve the structural integrity of future buildings and reduce the number of lives lost from catastrophic events.

Drexel School of Public Health Uses NetReach’s cmScribe Advanced Content Management System (CMS) Software for First National Diversity Preparedness Clearinghouse

AMBLER, Pa., July 8 /PRNewswire/ — Drexel University’s School of Public health has launched the National Resource Center on Advancing Emergency Preparedness for Culturally Diverse Communities. It’s the first national online database of resources focused on preparedness issues as they relate to racial/ethnic diverse populations. The fully content-managed web portal uses cmScribe’s new advanced software tools designed to deliver thousands of annotated and cross-referenced resources.
Dr. Dennis P. Andrulis, associate dean for research at the Drexel University School of Public health and the director of the school’s Center for health Equality — who also serves as the principal investigator on the clearinghouse project — chose NetReach as the technology partner to architect and develop the site and web database in December 2007. The project is funded as part of an initiative of the Office of Minority Health, U.S. Department of health and Human Services.
The modern, secure and encrypted browser-based applications produced using the new tools are familiar and easy-to-use. Jonathan Purtle, health Policy Analyst on the project said, “We were extremely impressed with how user friendly the site is to update and maintain. We’ve been busy making changes to the clearinghouse and adding resources since our tutorial. I can’t get over how easy it is to add new resources!”
The eagerly anticipated site was designed and deployed in under five months. It offers the opportunity for the School of Public health to bring together national, state and local resources to promote innovation, information exchange and program development across the spectrum of preparedness priorities. The website features:
— Resource management and editing
— Submittal of resources from outside parties
— Resource browsing capabilities
— Powerful search and filtering capabilities

NetReach created a set of application building tools to handle complex relational database projects within cmScribe-going beyond competitive content management systems (CMS). The tools provide flexible, extremely rapid prototyping and deployment of manageable, easily updated, scalable web database applications based on the .NET platform. These browser-based applications enhance productivity and interactivity through Web Services and provide centralized transaction processing and maintenance with distributed clients; which is especially helpful in the case of Dr. Andrulis’s international team of researchers and analysts who collaborate from various geographic locations.
“Our experience developing similar projects and complex data-driven applications provided us with the insight to create a system that can quickly deploy and manage applications in half the time of custom development methods,” according to Stephen Bouikidis, Executive VP of NetReach, “The long term cost of ownership is significantly lower due to zero code maintenance, and the easy-to-update nature of the system.”
About the National Resource Center on Advancing Emergency Preparedness for Culturally Diverse Communities
The mission of the National Resource Center is to provide a central and comprehensive database of resources and an information exchange portal for individuals, communities, government, emergency personnel, first responders, health care providers, public health professionals, researchers, businesses and policymakers to advance emergency preparedness and eliminate disparities for racial and ethnic communities across all stages of an emergency event.

Interactivity, Competitive Business Models, and Value-Added Services Driving Expansion of the Digital Lifestyle

DALLAS, July 1 /PRNewswire/ — Consumer demand for interactivity in entertainment and control at home is driving adoption in technology products and services, according to Parks Associates, which forecasts over 400 million households worldwide will have digital television services by 2012.
The market research firm’s analysts presented at CONNECTIONS(TM), June 24-26 at the Santa Clara Convention Center. The conference focused on access services, video delivery, online content services, advertising, digital health, digital media, and home systems.
Kurt Scherf, Vice President and Principal Analyst, highlighted key developments in advanced television services and discussed future areas of focus, including bandwidth issues and the “interactive experience” enabled by VoD, widgets, and advertising. Currently the lack of easy, high-quality connections between VoD services and the TV is a key inhibitor to the growth of the broadband VoD market. Parks Associates expects to see an increase in products and services aimed at connecting content to platforms in 2008 and beyond.
John Barrett, Director, Research, highlighted recent findings from National Technology Scan 2008, a telephone survey of U.S. households. “In the past year, approximately 45 million households purchased a mobile phone, 29 million purchased a digital camera, and 27 million purchased an MP3 player,” Barrett said. “Portable devices are clearly capturing the consumer’s attention right now more so than stationary devices.”
Michael Cai, Director, Broadband and Gaming, spoke about the changes in the broadband market. He predicted the next competitive cycle will center on bundles and value-added services. “Telcos will focus on multiplay bundles and value-added services, forcing a response from cable MSOs,” Cai said. “The increased importance of customer retention will lead to new and more intense rounds of loyalty programs and other customer retention tactics.”
Bill Ablondi, Director, Home Systems, highlighted growth in home systems, stressing their expansion into broader markets, including areas such as multiple-dwelling units, which represent new opportunities for digital systems and services. Also, remote home monitoring services offered through telco/MSO service providers will revolutionize the traditional home security business as broadband services disrupt yet another business model. Parks Associates forecasts that self-monitored households will nearly triple to more than 6 million by 2012.
Harry Wang, Director, Research, discussed personal health solutions. Parks Associates predicts this space will achieve $2.5 billion in U.S. device and service revenues by 2012. “There are significant barriers to overcome, but consensus is forming that technology can help empower consumers and health professionals in achieving better care at lower costs,” Wang said. “Now the technology industry must work with the health community to extend adoption to a broader patient population and convince the health ecosystem of the value of personal health technologies.”
Other areas covered at CONNECTIONS(TM) included GPS, WiMAX, digital advertising, and visual networking. Keynote speakers included executives from AOL, Cisco Systems, Comcast, Hewlett-Packard, and Panasonic. The event hosted close to 800 executives to examine the converging digital living industries. The thirteenth-annual CONNECTIONS(TM) will be held June 2-4, 2009, at the Santa Clara Convention Center.

(Logo: )
Announced at the Drug Information Association’s (DIA) 44th Annual Meeting, the awards were presented in the categories of discovery and product innovation, sales and marketing, and clinical development.
“The companies recognized are examples of true innovators in their approaches to solving some of the major challenges facing the global life sciences industry,” said Michael Naimoli, director of U.S. life sciences industry solutions at Microsoft. “Building on the Microsoft software platform, the winners demonstrated solutions that help streamline clinical trial and discovery processes and improve collaboration, bridging the gap between research, discovery and drug delivery.”
Award Winners
Submissions for this year’s awards came from global life sciences corporations specializing in biotechnology, diagnostics, medical equipment and devices, pharmaceuticals, animal health, nutritional products, and consumer health products. The winners are the following:
– Discovery and Product Innovation: AstraZeneca and Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. AstraZeneca is a major international healthcare business engaged in the research, development, manufacturing and marketing of prescription pharmaceuticals and is a supplier for healthcare services. With more than 12,000 R&D employees spanning eight countries, centralizing biochemical screening operations across its global R&D centers creates a host of challenges. Typically managed at the local laboratory level, the effort to harmonize disparate processes to record, track and manage a growing number of requests for compound screening was identified as a major hindrance to productivity.
AstraZeneca implemented Thermo Scientific Nautilus Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) to centralize biochemical screenings, map laboratory workflows and dramatically drive efficiency through superior data management. Built on Microsoft’s Visual Studio .NET, Thermo Scientific Nautilus LIMS helped coordinate global requests, automate workflows and standardize screening. Within six months of the deployment, AstraZeneca realized a 180 percent efficiency gain across its laboratories from the centralized screening process.
– Sales and Marketing: Sanofi-aventis and Brimstone. Sanofi-aventis, a leading global pharmaceutical company, discovers, develops and distributes therapeutic solutions. As the role of today’s pharmaceutical representatives is evolving, they are tasked with delivering real-time product information and clinical and patient support materials to communicate with physicians and other stakeholders across multiple channels.
Sanofi-aventis deployed Brimstone’s customer relationship management (CRM) v06 solution for life sciences to help develop a multichannel CRM solution based on Microsoft Dynamics CRM and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007. Utilizing existing technology investments, the solution helped marketing and sales staff easily segment and analyze customer information to improve the overall sales process and drive business performance.
– Clinical Development: The Scripps Research Institute and InterKnowlogy. The Scripps Research Institute, one of the country’s largest private, nonprofit research organizations, has become internationally recognized for its basic research across the life sciences and medical industry. As the organization grew its multidisciplinary proteome-wide projects, it required an enhanced collaboration tool that could bridge disparate global teams.
The Scripps Research Institute and InterKnowlogy designed a custom solution using the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0, Windows Vista and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 to display cellular, molecular and atomic levels in 2-D and 3-D, while providing tools for annotations. The result was a newfound ability to link multiple kinds of data to an image, making it easier and faster to send information from experiments across the organization. Researchers now spend less time searching for data and more time developing potential treatment solutions.
The 2008 Pharmaceutical and Life Sciences Innovation Award winners were selected by an esteemed panel of industry experts:

What’s more, unlike other medical record management solutions, MedeFile does the work of collecting, archiving and maintaining all records on behalf of its members.
“It is our belief that only MedeFile can succeed in helping to standardize electronic medical records management in this country, because it is the most comprehensive, robust patient-centric platform in existence. Through national awareness initiatives, such as this television ad campaign, we intend to bring MedeFile to the forefront of the industry and gain the level of momentum necessary to affect meaningful, positive change in the delivery of quality health care for all Americans,” added Hauser.
About MedeFile International, Inc.
Headquartered in New Jersey with offices in Southern California and South Florida, MedeFile has developed a proprietary system for gathering and digitizing medical records so that individuals can have access to a comprehensive set of their medical records. MedeFile’s primary product is the MedeFile system, a highly secure system for gathering and maintaining medical records. The MedeFile system is designed to gather all of its members’ actual medical records and create a single resource that is accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Representing an advanced, yet easy-to-use, approach to portable, electronic medical records management, MedeFile combines state-of-the-art technology and the Internet to make medical data instantly accessible to each MedeFile subscriber and his or her authorized healthcare providers from anywhere in the world. In addition to accessing one’s medical records through MedeFile’s secure Internet portal found at , members can carry their entire medical history and emergency information wherever they go on a unique device called a MedeDrive - a proprietary USB drive designed to be carried on a keychain. The MedeDrive plugs into any USB port of a Windows- based PC; and because MedeDrive automatically loads its own viewer, users do not require any special programs or software to view data. MedeMobile provides on-the-go subscribers with the ability to enjoy even greater flexibility and access to their personal health information wherever and whenever they need it.
